MySpace Set to Lay Off 400 Workers

The latest step in Rupert Murdoch’s effort to turn around the fortunes of his digital businesses came Tuesday in the form of hefty layoffs at MySpace.
MySpace, the social networking site owned by News Corporation, the media conglomerate controlled by Mr. Murdoch, said it was laying off roughly 400 employees, or nearly 30 percent of its staff. After the layoffs, MySpace will have about 1,000 workers.
The company said the layoffs were an attempt to return to a “start-up culture.”
In a statement, Owen Van Natta, a former Facebook executive who became chief executive of MySpace in April, said: “Simply put, our staffing levels were bloated and hindered our ability to be an efficient and nimble team-oriented company. I understand these changes are painful for many. They are also necessary for the long-term health and culture of MySpace. Our intent is to return to an environment of innovation that is centered on our user and our product.”
MySpace, which was acquired by News Corporation in 2005 for $580 million, was once the pre-eminent social networking site. But more recently it has lost some luster to Facebook, and at the same time has come up short of News Corporation’s financial projections.
Until recently, MySpace still had an advantage over Facebook in the United States, although Facebook had more users globally. But recently, according to comScore, Facebook has matched MySpace in the United States, with about 70 million members.

The Business of Tech MySpace Traffic Drop Costs News Corp About $100 Million

The MySpace social media network’s traffic has dropped so much that it will fail to satisfy a minimum traffic level crucial to parent company News Corp’s three-year $900 million advertising deal with Google, inked in 2006, that made Google the exclusive search advertiser on MySpace — then the world’s most popular social network.

News Corp. executives bandied about three different estimates of how much of the Google’s $900 million MySpace will not take in, due to the shortfall, but a consensus emerged that the penalty will be in the neighborhood of $100 million.
As the Financial Times points out, this Google ad deal covered News Corp.’s estimated $580 million purchase of MySpace. The site’s failure to provide the deal’s minimum traffic level is bad news for News Corp., which otherwise reported a generally positive outlook due to its movie studio and cable channels, which currently generate 85 percent of the company’s revenue.
MySpace knows as much as anyone that its traffic is dwindling as users continue their migration to Facebook and Twitter to do their social networking.
Rupert Murdoch’s new second-in-command at News Corp., Chase Carey, essentially admitted defeat in the social networking arena: “We’re not trying to beat Facebook. We’re not trying to beat Twitter.”
Rather than compete against those social networking heavyweights, MySpace intends to double down on what has always been a core strength: the millions of artist pages on the site, which dwarfs the catalog of other music services, because it includes so many unsigned (and, for that matter, signed) bands. MySpace’s new strategy, already known before the earnings call, will be to realign the site as an entertainment destination rather than a place where people keep up with friends and family.

If MySpace could help developers promote their applications to get more distribution, activity notifications in friends’ news feeds would be a great way to do it. Last night the company announced that they are rolling out the beta version of "application activities". Currently these application activities will only be viewable to developers until at least "after the holidays".

Once fully rolled out this will give developers on the MySpace platform, much greater promotional visibility. This is excellent news for developers but as Chris, a social application developer states in the MySpace forum, "I want to have my activities code ready to go the instant this goes live on the main site, but also I have a lot of urgent work to get done on other platforms which have much higher traffic."

The announcement follows the success of the MySpace iPhone application, which, according to MySpace’s figures, received 1.7 million daily unique mobile visits in July.

Travis Katz, managing director of MySpace International commented on how the announcement is the next step in the development of MySpace mobile, giving the social network’s 120 million active users the ability to connect on the go.

MySpace has announced the launch of Profile 2.0, that it says is the next step in the site's global redesign.

The revamps will let users customise the appearance of their profiles using a new drag-and-drop user interface.

"Profile 2.0 is everything users have been asking for", said Tom Anderson, president and co-founder of MySpace.

"You can now make your profile look different to different groups of friends. It gives users the privacy and customization they want."

The key features included in Profile 2.0 are drag and drop modules to create new profile layouts, the option for users to display certain info on their profile to chosen groups of friends and 50 new profile styles and themes.
Perhaps learning from rival Facebook's new look, that proved unpopular with some users, the Profile 2.0 is very much an opt-in option - with the choice to return to the old look at any point.

Users who opt for the branded skin "themes" featuring the films essentially turn their profile pages into billboards for the movies. Using the skins also leads to a sweepstakes component.
While Lionsgate is the launch partner for Profile 2.0, dozens of other brands will be offered in the coming weeks, including celebrity-driven ones for the likes of Ashton Kutcher and Kim Kardashian.

The problem with getting an awesome layout is always the same thing: TIME.

It takes a while to find the right one, edit the code, blah blah blah. Well thank goodness it's the weekend!

First, it doesn't really take that much time... but people always wait to the weekend to do it. Look at our newest MySpace Layouts or check out our giant list of MySpace Layouts. If you are one of those people who found a layout six months ago and have never changed it on your page then I'm talking to you. It's super easy, and your "online home" will have a SUPER make over.
MySpace: World Domination in 2008

It seems MySpacerealizes the key to its continued survival is foreign markets, and that’s exactly what it aims conquer over the next year. Expansion to India, Russia, Poland, South Korea and Turkey is imminent, the company says, as the core US market turns to hot young upstart Facebook.

Starting this month, MySpace is prepping country-specific versions of itself for foreign markets all over the world. Countries where Internet connections are slower (India, parts of Latin America), they will build an iteration that is streamlined and won’t load video automatically. In countries such as South Korea, which has higher speeds than the USA, and heavily favors blogging, MySpace will launch itself more as a blogging platform than the traditional social network. The most interesting launch has to be Turkey where they are so unfamiliar with social networking, they will include on-site tutorials to train users.

As MySpace continues to fight Facebook in almost all the markets, and is even being beaten by them in some, they are trying to break into these markets and quickly and early to secure their foothold. It is expected these new countries won’t bring in very much revenue for now, but they are essential to their long-term global strategy.

Hacked MySpace page serves up fake Windows update

The hacked page offers a Trojan horse disguised as a popup advising users to download the latest Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool

Using a hacked MySpace profile, online criminals are trying to trick victims into downloading a malicious Trojan Horse program
by disguising it as a Microsoft update, according to researchers at security vendor McAfee.

The attack is certainly not widespread -- McAfee has seen it used on only one MySpace profile -- but it does show how sites
like MySpace can be abused by criminals.

Web surfers are presented with what appears to be a popup window advising them to download the latest version of Microsoft's
Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool, which was just released this Tuesday. This software is distributed by Microsoft to
help Windows users rid their systems of malware.

In reality, the popup window is just part of a larger image that takes up most of the computer screen. If the user clicks
anywhere on this image, his computer will then begin to download the Trojan program.

The Trojan, known as TFactory, is a well-known piece of code that has been used by criminals for well over a year, according to Dave Marcus, a security
research manager with McAfee.

Hackers were able to launch this attack because they either discovered a flaw in the MySpace code or found a way of taking
over user accounts, Marcus said. "Our best guess is [the owner of the one MySpace profile] just got their password and user
name phished," he said.

Social networking sites allow their members to use an array of powerful Web programming tools that are increasingly coming
under the scrutiny of hackers looking for ways to misuse them.

In November, hackers found a way to serve up Web-based attack code from the MySpace profiles of Alicia Keys and a number of
other musical artists.

“How can I market my website?” “How can I get more traffic?” “How can I improve my pagerank and rankings in the SERPs?” “What Internet marketing tactics actually work?” This article continues below.
Are you the type of person asking these kinds of questions, feeling like a successful, high-traffic, money-making site is just out of reach? Do you have a limited marketing budget for your website? Then lucky for you that I’m all about PR, free promotion, and guerrilla marketing tactics! Here are some ways / tips / tools / resources to help you promote your site, increase your pagerank, and gain traffic, all for FREE! (I’ll continually add to this list when I can, so check back!)
Increase Your PR and Search Visibility

Link-building
Building incoming links (especially one-way, relevant incoming links, from high PR sites) is like gathering “votes” to your website or a specific page within it. The more “votes,” the more popular SEs like Google think your site is, allowing you to increase your pagerank and rankings in the SERPs (among other things).

Free Directories (submit your website to free directories - preferably non-reciprocal directories, for one-way backlinks to your site) The directories below offered free, non-reciprocal link submissions at the time of this posting.

aPlusLink.com

Web-Central.info

Your Sites / Blogs / Pages (There are many services allowing you to set up a free website, Web page, profile, blog, or similar places where you can create relevant content to your main site, and add backlinks or RSS feeds pointing to the site you’re building backlinks for - try to optimize these sites well for the Web, so they get their own PR and a bit of search engine exposure). Here are some services that allow you to set up your own website, blog, profile, or similar pages:

Squidoo.com - Build “lenses” for free on any niche subject you want. You can include links or RSS feeds to your primary website, can use it to promote your products or services, and can even make money in the process by using ad modules or affiliate ads. Squidoo lenses tend to get Google PR pretty easily.

Microsoft’s OfficeLive Basics - You can get a free domain name and Web hosting from Microsoft, but you’ll need to use their site-building tools (best idea if you want a bigger site, but basic, or a unique domain name). You can choose to transfer the domain later if you want to host your own site, but when I tried this, it wasn’t made easy (and I’m still trying to get the domain moved).

Wordpress.com - Free hosted blog on a subdomain of Wordpress.com.

Blogger.com - Free hosted blog from Google on a blogspot.com subdomain.

MySpace.com - A social networking site, where you can include a personal profile. Make the profile content (”about” section) related to the content of your website, and include a backlink.

LiveJournal.com - A free hosted blog / journal - you can add a link section pointing to your site(s).

Suite101.com - Sign up for a member account on this content network to be able to participate in discussions, and fill out your member profile with a link to your site(s).

Blog.com - Free hosted blogs.

AIM Pages - Sign up for a free AIM account for email and their instant messenger, and set up an AIM page with links to your website(s).

Multiply.com - Set up a profile on this social networking site, and link to your site(s) in your blog post

Forum Signatures (Find forums related to your site’s niche, and add a link to your site in your forum signature - being careful to follow forum rules. Then make quality posts in the forum to have your link displayed in each.)

Social Media (Use social bookmarking services and social content / news aggregators to build one-way backlinks. Just be sure not to spam the services, and follow their submission rules. Many social media sites have nofollow rules on their external links, meaning they won’t count towards backlinks for SE purposes, but they can still lead to traffic, so they’re includedThe following list of sites are available free social media sites.)

del.icio.us

Simpy

Blog Comments (Look for blogs related to the niche of your website, and leave relevant comments. Most will include a link back to your site automatically, or you can include it in the comment itself, as long as you’re not breaking the blog’s rules or spamming.)

Mint - Refreshing Money Management

Mint is the freshest, most intelligent way for you to manage your money online. Not only is Mint free, it saves you money. While existing personal finance software packages require hours to set up, a passion for accounting (is that possible?) and hours of weekly maintenance, Mint is virtually effortless.

With Mint , you can be fully up and running in less than five minutes. After that, revolutionary, patent-pending Mint technology does the rest, with virtually no more work required. It automatically pulls together your bank, credit union and credit card data, and provides up-to-date and amazingly accurate views of your financial life - from the big picture to specific details, in a friendly and intuitive way.

In addition, Mint goes beyond visibility and analysis; providing personalized money-saving and money-making suggestions. Mint provides users an average of $1,000 in savings opportunities during their first session. Plus, Mint is proactive— alerting you when you are overbudget, have a low balance, need to pay a bill, and more.
Mint is safe and secure: we never know your identity and we provide bank level data security.
How Mint works
Mint is a modern, powerful, easy and secure web-based solution for managing your finances. And it’s free. You register anonymously using any valid email address, and then add the log-in information for the online bank, credit union and credit card accounts you want to consolidate in Mint.
Mint connects to over 3,500 US financial institutions. Your account information is updated each night. Mint automatically categorizes all your purchases, showing you how much you spend on gas, groceries, parking, rent, restaurants, DVD rentals and more, with amazing precision. An advanced alerting system highlights any unusual activity, low balances, unwanted fees and charges, and upcoming bills so you’re in constant contact with your money – effortlessly.

Mint goes way beyond just reporting. Using a patent-pending search algorithm, Mint constantly searches through thousands of offers from hundreds of providers to find the best deals on everything from bank accounts to credit cards; cable, phone and Internet plans, and more. Mint’s suggestions are “unique to you” as they are based on your individual spending patterns. For example, if you have $20,000 in a bank account that’s earning no interest, Mint might recommend a high interest rate savings account from ING or HSBC. Acting on that suggestion would give you an extra $900 in interest income over a year.

Teapotters, a social network for 3d artists

Teapotters, a social network for 3d artists
Filed under: Internet, Web services, Social Software

In a world full of social networks, can we possibly utilize another? Why yes! Especially if it is targeted to a unique niche, as Teapotters is. The recently launched under beta Teapotters is targeted at 3D artists and already has a loyal following. Users upload 3D files, and Teapotters converts the 3D to display it on the site for all users to view. The converted 3D files can then be published on to other social networks, or into websites or blogs.

Through Teapotters, artists have the ability to share their material as long as it's not used for commercial purposes. This is the first website I've come across that lets users share real time 3D elements. Teapotters is currently in private beta, users can register to (hopefully) get an invite. Check out the video tour here.

Hacking a More Tasteful MySpace

The social phenomenon that is MySpace is one I don’t fully understand, and yet, one I must fully respect. In fact, with over 50 million unique users, it is something everybody must respect. Any website which rolls up that amount of usership is doing something very, very right, and no matter what your thoughts on it as a vehicle for your own expression are, you must give it its full due for what it is to seemingly everyone else.

Several weeks ago, I finally signed up for an account, and within seconds I was instantly put-off by what had been created for me: a hastily-designed “profile page” with uninspired colors, misaligned tables, and a mish-mash of extraneous cruft and design elements which made this feel more like a halfway house than a “home”. Now, granted, I am a designer by trade so my tolerance for this stuff is orders of magnitude lower than most of the population, but clearly, this was not a place I even felt comfortable having my name on.

So with the default home page this underwhelming, what is a MySpacer to do? Customize, of course. One of MySpace’s greatest features is its ability to let you skin your own home page. Unfortunately, 99% of the customizations I’ve seen are chalkboard-screechingly awful, but what could a MySpace home page look like if some actual design thought went into it? That is the question I sought to answer.

But first — as Keith Robinson asked me when I first showed him what I was doing — “Ummm, why?” The answer is twofold. First, I love a design challenge. Second, we’ve been building a lot of new social components into Newsvine over the past several weeks and I wanted a good reference point for what is already done well online and what could be improved.

So without further ado, on with the surgery…

Here Come the Social Network Ads, Part II: The Local Angle

To follow up on Kevin Newcomb's post earlier this week, there are some interesting local search and small business advertising implications to Facebook's and MySpace's new ad platforms.

First to reiterate, both platforms will seek to utilize users’ level of engagement, combined with the amount of information they make known about themselves through their profiles, interaction with friends and behavior.

But a key part of both ad platforms will also allow advertisers to target users by location. This will mostly be utilized by national advertisers that want to target users in certain geographies, but it could also have implications for small-business advertisers.

Some of these local advertising possibilities for Facebook have already been developed around classifieds, while MySpace has seen some activity around SMBs creating profiles to gain exposure through viral marketing. The new ad platform could create a channel for these businesses to more meaningfully market themselves on MySpace, similar to the way artists and bands have historically done.

One of Facebook's new ad products, Facebook Pages will similarly let small businesses build a profile -- just like an individual would -- which can develop a network of "fans" that connect to the business. Connecting to a business, writing on its "wall" and other activities will be very much the same as individual user profiles. The only difference is that the business has the option to promote that page within the Facebook network by buying demographic, geographic and keyword based targeting.

A newly opened tavern in San Francisco, for example, could target Facebook users between the ages of 25 and 40 that live in the city and have shown through their profile content, a behavioral affinity towards night life, microbrews and "gastropub" fare.

As part of its announcement, MySpace underscored that only 1 million of the 23 million SMBs in the U.S. advertise online, and most of that is search based advertising. Meanwhile MySpace has about 10 million companies of all sizes that have developed profiles on the network. The company is hoping the location-based targeting and other viral marketing capabilities baked into its platform will close the gap on the untapped SMB segment.

For both social networks, this however meets the traditional challenge (explored in an SEW expert column last month) of relying on small businesses to sign up on their own.

It's yet to be seen if this self provisioning challenge — made apparent through SEM — applies to social networking. There is a good chance it will, although it does have the baked in advantage of spreading itself virally as different small businesses get social and connect to one another. At least for MySpace, it won't just be "a place for friends" anymore.

Most Searchers Have Two Words for Google

The largest portion of searches contain two words finds Amsterdam-based research firm OneStat.

Internet users who type two words for on a search engine query account for 31.9 percent of searches worldwide. Three-word phrases are used for 27 percent of searches. A single word accounts for 15.2 percent of queries, and four words are used for 14.8 percent of searches.

"Search engines like Google, MSN, and Yahoo can drive a lot of traffic to a Web site," said Niels Brinkman, co-founder of OneStat. "It is important that a Webmaster or SEO expert knows what kind of search phrases they have to use."

Instances with five (6.5 percent); six (2.7 percent); seven (1.1 percent); eight (0.5 percent); nine (0.2 percent); and 10 (0.1 percent) words are used in fewer searches.

Are Facebook’s Social Ads Illegal?

Mark Zuckerberg promised no less than a revolution with his idea that ads you see on Facebook will be attached to the names and photos of your friends who like the products being advertised.

There is at least one problem with this idea: It may be illegal under a 100-year-old New York privacy law. The statute says that “any person whose name, portrait, picture, or voice is used within this state for advertising purposes or for the purposes of trade without the written consent first obtained” can sue for damages. Moreover, such a use is also a criminal misdemeanor.

According to William McGeveran, a professor at the University of Minnesota Law School who wrote about these laws in a blog post today, the law would apply to Facebook users anywhere if the ad were displayed in New York. Arguably, it could apply if the ad was displayed on a computer screen within the state. Yet “where the ad actually is in cyberspace is a whole other can of worms,” he said.

More broadly, Mr. McGeveran said people can sue advertisers who use their names and images without permission under a common law principle. He quotes from the law:
One who appropriates to his own use or benefit the name or likeness of another is subject to liability to the other for an invasion of his privacy.

Such a lawsuit, however, then would turn on the actual damages that a Facebook user incurred as a result of the advertisement. There have been a series of cases by celebrities who can claim that the use of their likenesses damaged their reputations and deprived them of their usual endorsement fees.

“It’s unclear that today’s teenagers and twentysomethings will be too upset by this,” said Mr. McGeveran.

While misdemeanors, such as the criminal aspect of the New York law, are rarely prosecuted, Mr. McGeveran said, “If Andrew Cuomo wanted to go after them, he could.” Mr. Cuomo, the New York attorney general, already took on Facebook for failing to properly protect minors using the site.
Another issue that could come up is what sort of consent is required under the law. Facebook, he said, has not explicitly asked users to approve their use in these ads. And the New York State law requires “written consent.”

Mr. McGevran said that while Facebook may have various ways to defend an action, it should follow the practice used by Madison Avenue.
“Standard advertising agencies have routines in place to avoid this problem,” he said. “They always, and I mean always, use stock photos” which are taken of models who consent to be used in ads.

Update: Chris Kelly, the chief privacy officer of Facebook, called to present a number of reasons why he thinks this law doesn’t apply to the new Social Ads. He said Mr. McGeveran’s interpretation of the law was too broad.

Mr. Kelly said the advertisements are simply a “representation” of the action users have taken: choosing to link themselves to a product. He added that in many states, consenting to something online is now seen as the equivalent of written consent.

And he argued that it would be difficult for someone used in one of these ads to object because that person had already chosen to publicly identify themselves with the brand doing the advertising.

“We are fairly confident that our operation is well presented to users and that they can make their own choices about whether they want to affiliate with brands that put up Facebook pages,” Mr. Kelly said.

Click a mouse, feed the hungry in U.N. campaign

A food-linked word game put on the Internet a month ago has proved a runaway success and has already generated enough rice to feed 50,000 people, the United Nations World Food Program said Friday.

FreeRice offers participants multiple-choice definitions to the meaning of a word, with each correct click generating 10 grains of rice for the WFP. The brainchild of American online fund-raising pioneer John Breen, the Web site FreeRice.com relies on advertising revenue to underwrite its rice campaign.

"The site is a viral marketing success story with more than 1 billion grains of rice donated in just one month to help tackle hunger worldwide," said Josette Sheeran, executive director of the Rome-based WFP. On October 7, the day it was launched, just 830 grains of rice were donated. But the Internet community quickly caught on, and on November 8 alone 77 million grains were donated--equivalent to more than 7 million correct clicks.

20 Ways To Aggregate Your Social Networking Profiles

In an inspired blog post, Jason Kottke said that social networks aren’t helping us organize; since all of them require different credentials to log in, they’re just adding to the noise. He just might be up to something there. It’s getting harder and harder to remember all those logins, passwords, and most importantly to remember which of your friends are using what network.

Social network aggregators is a relatively new breed of applications which try to consolidate all your various social networking profiles into one, with varying success. Let’s check out 20 biggest competitors in this field.

Profilactic

Profilactic has very recently been upgraded to version 2, which brought a decent amount of new features - a new look, support for Pownce, LinkedIn, Shelfari, and the ability to add more than one account for the same site. At its core, Profilactic still does the same two things: it displays your personal lifestream, which consists of your social networking activity, and a group lifestream from your friends. What it does, it does well; however, we’d still like to see more options to interact with the items in your streams. There’s also the option to create clippings - bits and pieces of information from the web; but this option is not really connected to the rest of the features on the site.

Minggl

Minggl is a browser toolbar that works with Firefox, IE and Flock and promises to “put you in control of your social web universe”. Unfortunately, you’ll have a hard time testing this claim unless you have an invitation code, since Minggl is currently in invitation-only phase. The idea behind Minggl is to “attach” social networking profiles to Minggl and then control them all from one place. You can see an overview of the main features in this video tutorial.

iStalkr

Another application that’s based on the concept of group lifestreaming, iStalkr perhaps chooses the most logical route of all the applications on this list. It enables you to follow your own and your friends’ social networking activities on a timeline, and to act on it directly from iStalkr’s interface. Working with iStalkr, we’ve noticed that the updates aren’t coming that fast; but we’re not sure if this is due to the limitations of various APIs involved or iStalkr itself.

Visions of computers of the future

Although the computers that we will be buying next year have yet to be built, Intel already knows exactly what they will be capable of doing.

PCs set to become digital hubs
Top of the list is the building of wireless network technologies so home computers can act as a co-ordinating hub for all electronics in a home.

Next year's machines are expected to be much better at carrying out more than one complicated task at a time and much easier to upgrade and swap parts in and out.

Also on the list of improvements are changes to the way that PCs talk to TVs and stereos.

PC guide

Every year Intel produces a document called the Desktop Platform Vision. This details how it expects the hardware inside a PC to change over the next 12 months to accommodate the changing demands of users.

The 2003 document defines what desktop machines will be like this time next year.

Intel will only share the full document with the companies that are going to be making the PCs that consumers and companies will buy. But it regularly throws out hints about what it expects future computers to be like.

Intel bases this document on end-user research that studies the novel things people are finding to do with their PC and the difficulties they must overcome to do these things. The basic technologies needed to let people do more and to overcome the difficulties find a place in the pages of the vision guide.

To ensure that the technologies it is backing work well together Intel and its partners build reference designs that use early versions of future chips and peripherals to catch bugs before machines go into production.

The most important changes to the basic design of the home PC will centre around its ability to talk to other devices.

Wireless network technology is likely to be built in to the chassis of the computer allowing it to join, or form, a home network from switch-on.

New advertising strategy is a big gamble for Facebook

NEW YORK--When Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg spoke to a room full of reporters shortly after announcing the company's new Facebook Ads initiative, it became clear that this move is a risky one. Facebook Ads, with its focus on "trusted referrals," is heavily rooted in viral distribution tactics. And it's well-known by now that while a viral phenomenon can reach soaring levels of popularity, it can also become synonymous with in-your-face annoyance.

Zuckerberg was insistent that Facebook users will appreciate the fact that they'll be seeing advertisements that cater specifically to their interests and that showcase recommendations from their friends. "It seems like people prefer targeted ads. They just perform way better," he said. "The point that we're trying to make today is that it's way more organic and natural."

But there are questions--some big ones. One reporter voiced skepticism over the fact that because they're advertisements, the "trusted referrals" will only extend to positive reviews, whereas a major component of real-life recommendations among friends is what not to buy.

Perhaps more troubling is the fact that if you sign up as a "fan" of an advertiser group on Facebook--a brand of sneakers, for example--your name will automatically run alongside "Social Ads" for that brand in your friends' profiles, and Zuckerberg said that there's not yet a way to opt out of that.

"This is the first iteration of this," the Facebook founder assured the press as he explained that since Facebook Ads is new, the company could potentially change that no-opt-out policy for being a "fan" of a group. "When we announce a product, we want to also launch it (but) I wouldn't say that what we're launching today is the final version."

He promised that the company would act quickly if any concerns arose.

Facebook now ranked 3rd in Page Views; MySpace down nearly 20%

MySpace has enjoyed a relatively long and successful run as in a red hot sector of the internet, but it may not be long before the site has to defend this title. Facebook, having gone through big changes about every three months for the past year, may have finally started to pull users away from the incumbent. Facebook has grown not only in member base, but also in member engagement, while MySpace has fallen dramatically on these same measures.

In terms of both monthly Attention and Page Views, MySpace has been the highest ranking site on the internet since early 2006.
What it lacks in unique visitors, MySpace makes up for with intensity: people visit an average of 18 times per month, and stay for over 26 minutes.
Facebook received 15.7 billion page views in August. This puts the site squarely in third place (across the internet) in terms of page views
Since launching its application platform, Facebook attention has grown over 50%.
Visitors to Facebook have been spending more time on the site, and visiting more frequently in August than in any other recent month.
There’s still a substantial gap between traffic to these two social networks, but Facebook’s growth trajectory, seemingly endless supply of 3rd party applications and multiple ways for members to engage one another makes it a serious threat to MySpace. But how does this engagement happen? Later on this week we’ll take an in-depth look at Facebook usage…stay tuned.

Did you know that Imeem is the fastest-growing social site in the U.S (up 1,590 percent in monthly uniques). And that AIM Pages is growing slightly faster than Digg (345 percent growth versus 323 percent)? Well, at least according to comScore. I asked comScore to do a ranking of social sites in the U.S. and then I reordered the list by growth rate.
